September 30 honours the children who never returned home from residential schools, the Survivors who did, and their families and communities. Created in response to Call to Action 80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the statutory holiday ensures that this history and its continuing effects are publicly remembered.
There is no formal MITARCS event planned this year. We invite everyone on SḴŦAḴ / Mayne Island to use the day for reflection and learning, to listen to Indigenous voices, and to consider what reconciliation asks of us in our relationships and everyday actions.
Wearing orange is one way to show remembrance and support. The deeper work continues throughout the year.
